The Sovereign Tribes and The U.S.

I read on www.airpi.org that American Indian Tribes have their own sovereign nation but the U.S. Congress has the right and overriding power to limit the sovereign powers of the Tribes and Indian affairs. In my head I'm thinking, "Why bother giving him their own nation if the U.S. Federal Government can do whatever they want to the Indian's Tribal Community?" I suppose it is better than nothing but if they are their own nation, the U.S. government should stay out of the Tribal Villages community.

  1. Hi Mahea,

It is challenging to understand the difference between tribes having always had sovereignty and the US federal/state/local governments positions challenging that them on it.

Imagine if the shoe was on another foot and some outside group of people (or aliens for any sci-fi fans) came into the US, killed off 90% of us and then pushed the rest of us off into spaces often far from our homes and economic activities, all the while signing treaties that they did not respect.

As we talked about in class, tribal sovereignty is hugely relevant, complicated and something all US citizens should have at least a working knowledge of the basic tenents of, after all this relationship is the foundation of the USA.
